Annointing of the Sick

Our Lady of Lourdes
November 16 - 2:00 p.m.

The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude.  These graces flow from the atoning death of Jesus Christ, for “this was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases’” (Matt. 8:17 ).  Our mission as Church is to do what Jesus did. And on nearly every page of the Gospels we read of Jesus' concern for the sick. Healing was essential to the mission of the disciples: "He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two.... They anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them" (see Mark 6:7-13). After Jesus ascended into heaven, the Church continued to be a sacrament of healing: "Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven" (James 5: 14 -15). Today we are all aware that tensions, fear and anxiety about the future affect not only our mind but our body as well. These illnesses can be serious. They can move us to ask for the healing touch of Christ in the Sacrament of Anointing.

Our Stewardship

Thoughts on Stewardship:

Well done, my good and faithful servant…Come, share your master’s joy.”  (Matthew 25:21)

The master’s words of praise and welcome for the servant who used his talents well are the same words that each of us hopes to hear when we meet God face to face.  “Well done, my good and faithful servant … Come, share your master’s joy.”  We use our “talents” well when we live simply, make God a priority in our lives and share our gifts with others.
